Sorry to all our internet listeners out there. I got out of the habit of posting updates. Let’s start March of right with a backlog of updates and a promise to keep up with things moving forward.

Ergativity Lab had its real first meeting of the semester Tuesday 1/29. Robert led discussion about developing the section of our ergativity questionnaire dealing with the source of absolutive case. If you need a refresher, be sure to read Julie Legate’s 2008 paper on ”Morphological and Abstract Case.” You can email Robert if you need a copy.

ErgLab met again on Tuesday 2/12. We continued to talk about developing our questionnaire, this time focusing on diagnostics for antipassives. Maayan led the discussion, drawing on Arka’s 2009 paper, The core-oblique distinction and core index in some Austronesian languages of Indonesia.

The third ErgLab meeting of the year was Tuesday 2/19. We discussed diagnostics for antipassives for our questionnaire, using Maayan’s handout. Topics included variation in properties among different constructions called “antipassive” and the distinction between secondary predicates and adjectives and its relevance to antipassives.
