On Thursday (8/18), ErgLab member Maayan Adar introduced the group to the voice and case systems of Tagalog. The language raises important challenges for the ergative-accusative distinction. As Maayan discussed, its rich voice system makes it difficult to identify exactly which type of transitive clause is basic. Most likely, it’s only by increasing the theoretical depth of our discussion that we’ll be able to see connections between the case and voice systems of Mayan and Austronesian.
