ErgLab had its first meeting today. Robert and Jessica talked about ergativity in Mayan languages, focusing on Kaqchikel and Chol, which come from opposite sides of Mayan family. While the talks were primarily introductory, we already see ergative patterns in one language that are different or even missing in the second language. Are all of these differences independent or are some correlated? What types of morph(syntactic) parameters underlie these differences in the expression of ergativity. This will be our primary question moving forward, though next week Maayan and Lisa will be introducing ergativity in Austronesian.
