Today ErgLab discussed the first three sections of Legate’s 2008 paper Morphological and Abstract Case, digging into the idea that some ergative case systems are the result of default morphological case. The result is that absolutive morphology is never the reflex of underlying abstract “absolutive” case. This lays the groundwork for next week’s discussion of Aldridge’s 2011 piece Antipassive and ergativity in Tagalog. Maayan will be presenting his commentary on this work in relation to Legate’s partition of ergative case systems into the ABS=DEF type and the ABS=NOM type.
